Choosing an "Accelerated Reader®" Book

Accelerated Reader® is a reading incentive program that has been adopted by many schools in the Library's service area.  Students are asked to read specific titles at or near their determined reading level and then complete a computer quiz, earning points for passing the test.

While reading level is often the first factor considered in selecting an Accelerated Reader® title, it is also important to remember the developmental level of the child.  Many books may have content intended for an older or more mature audience but are assigned low reading levels because of their vocabulary or sentence length.  Another factor to consider is the child's reading interests.  Since one of the keys to becoming a lifelong reader is reading for personal enjoyment, a child's interests can play an equally important role in successful book selection.

The Children's Services Staff is happy to assist both parents and children in finding the Accelerated Reader® titles best suited to the child's needs.  Because lists can vary from school to school, the Library does not place Accelerated Reader® stickers on its books.  The Library does, however, have title lists from many schools available in its Homework Central collection.  For help in locating the lists or for more information, ask at the Children's Services Desk.
