National Library Week 2013
Carol Stream Public Library
“In 1957 the National Book Committee, a joint committee of the American Library Association and the American Book Publishers Council, recommended the establishment of a National Library Week. The first National Library Week was observed May 16-22, 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read". It has continued every year since 1958. In 1974, the American Library Association became the sole sponsor of the event. The 50th anniversary of National Library Week was celebrated in 2008.” Source: http://www.libraryhistorybuff.org/libraryweek.htm.
Come celebrate National Library Week at the Carol Stream Public Library. For the entire week of April 14-20, the Library will have free food, contests, prizes, and more. A Community Hospitality table will be set up in the Library and will be staffed during the hours listed on the schedule on the other side of this page. While the table is open, free giveaways will be handed out to anyone visiting the Library. Patrons can also pick up a handout with questions regarding the history of the Carol Stream Public Library (CSPL trivia sheet). Answers are included on the quiz sheet. An additional history of Carol Stream handout will also be available.
Due to limited quantities, promotional giveaways can only be given out one per person per day for those present at the Library.
The Library will also be running four concurrent contests that week. The rules for each contest are posted on the contest forms themselves. All contest due dates are also listed on the contest forms. With the exception of the Kindle Fire HD contest, all other contests are open to anyone who visits the Library, Carol Stream Patron or otherwise. The Kindle Fire HD contest is only for Carol Stream Patrons. The poster contest does have an age requirement.
For all ages, a contest sheet with multiple choice questions about the Library’s online databases. Winner receives a $25 gift card to Half-Priced Books.
For all ages, a poetry contest challenging aspiring poets to fill out an acrostic. Winner receives a professional writing journal..
For all ages, a Carol Stream Photo Location Contest. A poster will be displayed with several photos of the area and a form will be given out asking a question about each one. Winner receives a $25 gift card to Half-Priced Books.
For Kindergartners to High School Students, a poster design contest. Design a fun inspiring poster based around this year’s National Library Week theme “Communities Matter @ The Carol Stream Public Library”. There are two age ranges that will be judged for this contest. Both winners will receive an art set.
